This weekend, (2/1/98) the Associated Press reported that the conservative "Rutherford Institute" is asking President Clinton to join their cause and assist them in saving the life of a most heinous ax-murder. What makes this so ironic is that the Rutherford Institute is paying Paula Jones to accuse the President of sexual harassment!
I'm sure President Clinton got a good laugh out of that, I know I did. "Gee, you need ME to help YOU? Why not? It's not like you are trying to ruin me or run me out of the very office from whence you seek assistance." As Homer Simpson might say, Dough!
Perhaps the President should reply "I'd love to help you defend human dignity. I had a bunch of money set aside for just such a purpose, only I had to use it to defend myself from YOU."
Additional background:
By the way, the murderer in question is Karla Faye Tucker of Texas.
She is scheduled to die in just two days (Tuesday, February 3, 1998)
for brutally killing Jerry Lynn Dean with a hammer and pick-ax.
Only now she has "found jesus" and therefor expects that we should pay
to keep her alive for the next 30 or 40 years (Tucker is only 38 now,
and was about 23 when she slaughtered Mr. Dean).
Update:
Karla was executed on-time, after her appeals were exhausted. By a vote
of sixteen to ZERO the Texas parole board voted to deny clemency.
The Supreme Court, again, refused to halt the execution. And Gov. Bush,
who could have only delayed the execution by 30-days, refused to
intervene.
