Thought for the day
March 2, 1999
Today would have been Theodor Geisel's 95th birthday. Sadly, he is not alive to enjoy this day. He died in 1991. Of all the modern authors, how many have had a more delightful impact on the world?
I was driving down a rural highway in Alabama the day I heard Dr. Suess had died. And even though he was far from being a young man, I was very sad that he was gone. Afterall, what child has not experienced the bright and wonderful imagination of this man? Who would be left to warn us about the "who's" and teach us about sneeches?
But no one lives forever. And the good "Doctor" lived long enough to have a tremendous positive impact on us all, and on me. Out of respect for him, and the memory of my parents reading to me, I continued to read to my children.
I would encourage each of you, no matter how large or small, to think of all the happy times you have enjoyed reading Dr. Suess' books or rolling his rhymes. If you have children, please read to them. If you can't, please call your library, RIF, or the Laubach Literacy Campaign.
What a marvelous world we inhabit that produces people like Mr. Geisel.
