Thought for the day

March 10, 1999

Today, March 10, Reuters reported that Elizabeth Dole announced the formation of an "exploratory group" to decide if she should run for President of the United States of America. This is sort of a non-event. She is announcing that she is thinking about announcing that she might like to be President. I like the idea of having a female Commander-in-Chief. I think it's high time. Sadly, for her at least, I don't think that woman will be Elizabeth Dole. Aside from the fact that she has never been elected to any office, she has a HUGE problem, she's chasing the Republican nomination. Republicans might smile and pat themselves on the back at how "modern" they have become by allowing a woman to even fantasize about becoming President, but they won't vote for her. Well, I take that back. Moderate and "fiscal" Republicans might, but not the core of the GOP. The people running the Grand Old Party are the same people who caused a stir last year with their pronouncement that women should "submit" to their husbands. How can they publicly claim that god wants women to do what men tell them to do and then put a woman in charge of men? Remember how the fundie's attacked Hillary Clinton because she didn't stay at home and bake cookies? How likely are people like that to want to have a woman running the country?

You hang in there though Elizabeth. You're obviously an intelligent woman and even though your party has an aggressive reputation for being "anti-woman" nothing but good can come from your diligent work to drag them into the twentieth century. But you'd better hurry, we've only got a few months left until the 21st century begins and the GOP has a lot of catching-up to do!
