Thought for the day

March 19, 1999

Well, what do you know? A federal appeals court dismissed the right-wing "Landmark Legal Foundation's" law suit that sought to shield Ken Starr from being punished for his numerous abuses of power.

Starr has been fighting a rearguard action ever since his salacious "report" was found inadequate and President Clinton was cleared on all charges. Now he's trying to get even with Susan McDougal for not testifying in his witch-hunt and he's trying to punish a witness who's testimony contradicted one of his manufactured Clinton accusers.

I've also read that yet another one of his top "inquisitors" has resigned rather than remain to face his own investigation and possible indictment. This one was Jackie Bennett. He had a big part in the Lewinsky kidnapping and interrogation. He helped to prevent her from contacting her lawyer because the Starr team knew that if she spoke to her lawyer BEFORE the next business day, her affidavit would be revoked and all leverage against her would evaporate. How could Starr have known what was in an affidavit that had NOT YET been filed with the court? He got it from the Paula Jones lawyers! Those are the lawyers that Starr swore under oath that he was NOT working with.

Starr said of his latest escapee, he "performed admirably with complete honor and integrity." Well, by Starr's contemptible standards, he probably did. But that's not saying much.

So where do we go from here? Beats me. The Republicans just voted to keep paying Starr's bills FOREVER. (No lie. They voted against ever stopping the funding of Starr's OIC. No matter how long it goes on!) That's not surprising. Even though Republicans say  they want to reduce government spending, they rarely pass-up a chance to line a friend's pocket.
