Thought for the day

April 12, 1999

Well, well, well.   What happened today?   Susan McDougal was acquitted (that means "Not Guilty") of obstruction of justice in the Starr witch-hunt.

Sadly, the jury split 7 to 5 in favor of acquitting her of the other (lesser) charges.   By that I mean that seven of the twelve saw that she was not guilty on any charge.   So it's possible that she might be subject to some more harassment from the Starr's team on these two "contempt of court" charges, but maybe not.   After all, it's not like they just had one lone holdout who kept the jury from convicting her.   There were seven! For those of you from foreign lands (or who attended fundamentalist home-schools) it takes ALL TWELVE jurors to convict in this country.

Congratulations Mrs. McDougal.   You showed amazing courage and strength of character.   When faced with the choice between telling lies for Starr's inquisitors or going to prison, you went to jail.   What an amazing person you are.   Sadly, so many other people were unable to stand up like this for truth and justice (they weren't necessarily evil people, Starr just had too much power for them to resist).

I wish you well Ma'am!

Footnote: According to the Reuters news agency, "McDougal's indictments on the three counts were the only indictments produced by a grand jury probing Clinton's involvement in the failed Whitewater real estate scheme which he entered into with McDougal and her late ex-husband James McDougal."

In short, this was what we, the taxpayers, got for giving Ken Starr 45 million dollars!
