Thought for the day

April 27, 1999

The Dallas Morning News is reporting that Republican Representative J. C. Watts (OK) is considering breaking his promise to serve only three terms in the House. You see, back in 1994 he ran on a "throw the bums out, serving too long corrupts" platform. But now that he is the "bum" the public teat is proving too tempting for old J.C.

I, personally, don't have a problem with someone staying in Congress longer than six years, what I have a problem with is liars. If you make a promise, keep it. Run for the Senate if you just can't stand the thought of not being a Washington D.C. insider. (Hell, I'd run for dogcatcher in Kosovo before I'd go back to Oklahoma. Maybe J.C. feels the same way!)

J.C. isn't the only Republican considering making a liar out of himself. There's one another one in Washington state and one or two others around the country. I can only hope the people are smart enough to reject that type of person for continued service.
