Thought for the day

May 30, 1999

This week, while hyping his new film "Summer of Sam,'' at the Cannes Film Festival in France, director Spike Lee was quoted as saying the way to combat violence in the USA would be to disband the NRA and shoot Charleton Heston with one of the cheap "Saturday-night special" handguns that his organization works so hard to promote. House Republican Leader Dick Armey of Texas "blasted" back that "Charlton Heston does not deserve that kind of a cheap shot from this second-rate movie producer."

Caution, entering sarcasm zone. Proceed with at your own risk!

Oh my! Spike has really done it now. Long a darling of the fundamentalist right-wingers for his classic movies like "Jungle Fever" and "Malcom X," how will he ever live with the burden of them being upset? And these fundie's have a lot of clout with Mr. Lee, afterall who do you think pays to see his movies? The 700-Club watching, "gotta buy some more guns" Midwestern trailer-park set? Or the inner-city minorities that are frequently murdered with the sort of guns that Mr. Heston and the NRA want to prevent any and all restrictions on?

During the past couple of weeks the NRA has been pushing hard to stop new Democratic laws to prevent children and felons from buying weapons at "gun shows." How could Mr. Lee so callously misrepresent the position of the NRA? Just because Chuck Heston came out after the Columbine H.S. shooting and said that the solution was to distribute EVEN MORE GUNS. Come on Spike, how could you?

Violence isn't the answer. It's OK for Mr. Heston to advocate shooting people like the the boys from Columbine, but it's absolutely off limits for Spike Lee. Afterall, he's black!
