Thought for the day

June 12, 1999

New developments in the Tyisha Miller killing case. The four white police officers who killed Tyisha in her sleep are going to be dismissed from the Riverside police force. You might think that's a pretty good deal, kill a black woman and lose your job. But the cops in question think it's too harsh and claim they'll sue. They only killed a nigger, why should they be punished? Shouldn't the Klan present them with a special police citation?

Tyisha, a beautiful young black woman is dead. No punishment will bring her back. Not bringing charges against the officers who slaughtered her in her sleep (12 bullets hit the unconscious girl) is an outrage. But to allow the killers to continue to wear the uniform and carry a gun is beyond belief. The Riverside city council might as well issue white robes and pointy white hats, that's the message they would be sending.

Every time a cop pulls out his or her gun and shoots to kill, serious consequences must be brought to bear. Police are not given guns to hand out justice, that's for our courts. Police have guns to protect citizens and themselves. To stand outside a car and shoot a sleeping person multiple times seems to me as overstepping the boundary of self defense.

The city bent over and allowed the killer's fellow policemen to perform the investigation that (surprise!) "cleared" them of murder. But no court and no jury has had the chance to weigh in yet. If the killers go ahead with their lawsuit against the city, I hope a new investigation (maybe even a real one this time) can be performed and the cops brought up to face a jury for this killing.
