Thought for the day

June 19, 1999

Today I took my daughter and her friend to see Disney's latest animated feature, Tarzan. Based upon Edgar Rice Burroughs' books, this movie is focused like a laser on its target market, the kids.

Will your kids like it? Gee, I don't know, are they breathing? Yes? Then, yeah I think they'll like it and also want you to buy the merchandise.

Will you like it? I did. Phil Collins does the sound track. Glenn Close is his adopted (gorilla) mother. Rosie O'Donnell is the sidekick. Minnie Driver voiced "Jane." Ah, Jane. I noticed that this time around the animators at Disney drew a female lead who didn't pack a pair of 38-DD's. Very refreshing for a change. Almost as if a woman's breasts weren't the most important feature. Not to say she was flat-chested, but this Jane could see her feet without a mirror and for animated females, that's a big step.

From the technical point of view, they have this thing they named "deep canvas animation" that will blow you away. Remember how cartoons used to be like the game "Super Mario Bros."? the characters would walk from left to right as the background scrolled by and they remained center 'stage.' Well, forget about that rookie crap. In this movie, Tarzan "surfs" down branches toward the viewer as the scenery changes size and color to indicate perspective. It's very convincing. There was one scene way back in "Beauty and the Beast" where the "camera" moved around Belle and the Beast as they danced. Well, they've nailed that in this one. Much better positioning and movement.

See it? Yes, take the kiddies to see it. Not because Disney needs more money, but because this is much more age-appropriate for the preteen crowd than Austin Powers. Of course I'm assuming you've taken them to see Star Wars -- The Phantom Menace at least TWICE. You have, haven't you? (My son and I have been 4 times, so far).
