Interesting story from the Quayle campaign today. Mississippi Gov. Kirk Fordice announced he would resign his position as co-chair of Dan's election committee. This was a symbolic position at best, but the reason for his resignation is interesting.
You see, good old Gov. Fordice resigned because he's a hypocrite. He attacked President Clinton for being unfaithful to his wife, claimed to advocate "family values" and all the while carried on a secret affair with another woman. Unlike Mr. Clinton, Fordice is unable to accept responsibility for his inappropriate actions and still maintains that cheating, lying and divorce are not inconsistent with good family values. This should serve as a bright, neon warning sign for what the "do as I say crowd" really practices with their own families.
Apparently Dan Quayle got the message and even though his office won't officially comment, they accepted the resignation and withdrew their previous support. I'm sorry it came to that. I strongly oppose Quayle, and am sorry to see a liar and cheat be removed from his campaign organization, but at least the "imperial caddy" is owning-up to his believes, unlike Gingrich, DeLay, Burton and Hyde.
Why mention this? Should divorce and adultery be grounds for disqualification from public service or service in the staff of a buffoon? No. But I am nauseated when kooks claim to be upset by the President's behavior all the while committing the same "moral" offenses. Gov. Fordice's lame-assed excuse was that "I have never lied to the people, wagging my finger on TV and telling blatant lies about my conduct" So, let's get this straight, if you cheat on your wife and divorce her it's OK, as long as you don't "wag" your finger? I think Gov. Fordice should practice not wagging some other member!
So, Quayle distances himself from a supporter and maybe even a friend. Is he making a statement? Will other divorced staffers be cut-loose? Maybe they'll just have to wear a scarlet "D" on their suits? I don't know. But I can't wait to find out.
