Thought for the day

July 13, 1999

Today, Senator Bob Smith, of New Hampshire, turned his back on the party that worked so hard and spent so much money to elect him.

Like me, Bob disagreed with the GOP and how they carry out their agenda. Unlike me, he didn't quit because the thought their attempts to control how Americans think and act were fascist. He quit because their policies weren't extreme enough!

Good 'ole Bob, he can't accept that the Constitution wasn't written to force everyone to believe the way he believes. The fact that some Republicans are willing to work to make this a better country infuriated him and he cannot tolerate anyone believing any other way but his way.

Of course, this also has to do with the fact that he is running a ludicrous campaign for the highest office in the land, the Presidency itself. Even in his home state there are not even 1% of the voters who support him. So this is his way to make a splash and get his extremist views in front of the public. Will it work? The old fart's got a better chance of kicking a goal past Briana Scurry!

The Republican party isn't brain-dead (despite indications to the contrary) and they realize that they will continue to lose elections if they align themselves as the party of the fascist right-wing demagogues. But that's why Smith is leaving, the party isn't extreme enough. Oh well.

It's good for America to have a loud and active political discourse. We always need to challenge the status quo and continue to improve as a nation. The Republicans saw major gains by weaving together the kooks with mainstream citizens. But the kooks are welcome (in my opinion) to leave anytime. It makes the GOP that much weaker. Adios Bob, and the horse you rode in on!
