Today, details of Bob Barr's (R, GA) confession/plea bargain were made public for the first time since the deal to keep him out of prison was inked back in May.
While Barr's staff characterize this sweetheart deal as
"one of those business-as-usual deals that cleaned up some things from Mr. Barr's initial races for Congress that had to do with highly technical aspects of federal election law."
The reality was much more serious. In fact, Bob Barr is a former prosecutor. That means he is supposed to be familiar with the law. Perhaps he never studied up on illegal campaign contributions, but that's no excuse for not reading the rules or at least hiring someone for your staff to keep you honest.
Before you start buying Barr's line that this was just a trivial matter, let me remind you of three things:
So, what's up? I dunno. I don't know how Barr got this deal. I don't know how he can look himself in the mirror each morning after reaming the President out for the same behavior that he, himself, commits.
I hope his constituents are as disgusted with him as I am, but I fear that many are so blinded by a pathetic hatred for President Clinton that they perceive anyone opposed to him as a hero. As far as I'm concerned, people who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones.
