Ok, this has been quite a week. I've been taking a break (from my writing) because I've been putting in a lot of extra hours at my day job. But I can't stand it any more. There's so much going on that I just have to talk about it.
This week Danforth Quayle finally threw in the towel and admitted what we already knew to a moral certainty, he would never be elected President of the United States. Whew! That's a relief!
Actually, there was never any doubt. But it's worth mentioning for a couple of reasons. First of all, Quayle enters a very dubious club with this humiliation. He is one of a tiny handful of men who were once Vice-president and yet were rejected by their party to run for President.
Secondly, Quayle frequently brags that he "never lost an election." Yes, you read that right. He made that (incorrect) boast even after he and George Sr. lost their bid at reelection to Bill Clinton. And now, we drive what I hope will be the final nail in the coffin of Danforth's political career. He has been deserted by his staff, his advisors, his party and even his beloved radical right-wing. I honestly never suspected the fascists might waiver in their support of Dan Quayle. But along came Gary Bauer, who was even more "religiously correct" and didn't have this enormous millstone of being the national fool (at least not yet, but now that Dan's gone, the post is open).
Well, Bauer will have to work really hard to "out-moron" Pat Buchanan Pat recently released a book that insinuated the U.S. shouldn't have bothered to fight WWII because all Hitler wanted was Europe. And all Hirohito wanted was the Pacific Rim. Pat thinks we should just mind our own business. The problem (for Pat) is that a very large majority of the Republican party are patriotic. Many Republicans are veterans of WWII or the descendant's of veterans and they believe (as do I) that the second world war was "just" and "right." At least as Just and Right as any war can be. The forces of freedom and, dare I say, Good battled with old evil. The people Mr. Buchanan would like to give Europe, Asia, and Africa to were evil right to the core. If Patty thinks Nazi's would make good neighbors and trading partners, I think we had better keep a close eye on him too!
