Thought for the day

Get a free book (or audio book) today.

January 17, 2004

Today I was shopping at a bookstore called "Borders." I was looking for a book on software management. They were out of stock on the one I wanted, but as I walked out, I walked past a display of nicely bound "classics." The title that caught my eye was Mark Twain's Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. But I didn't even slow down.

I knew, as I hope you do, that these old classics are beyond their copyright. Mr. Clemens is long dead and even if you buy this book no money will go to his heirs or estate (as well it shouldn't. But that's another TFTD.) Instead, the profit goes to the bookstore, publishers, distributors, middlemen and so on (also, as it should be.)

But the reason I didn't slow down was because I knew that books like this one are available for free, 24-hours a day, 7-days a week through Project Gutenberg.

When I got home, I went there and did a search. Sure enough, they had Huck Finn. But then I discovered something unexpected. They ALSO have some of Twain's works available as AUDIO Books. And they're still free! Since you're downloading them, they are NOT "on tape" because there is no physical transfer. They're not mailing you a cassette or CD. You download it and listen to it. Play it on your computer or save it to your MP3 player and listen to it wherever you want.

I decided to write a step-by-step guide to getting these audio books. View it here. You can also find thousands of other books for free that are available in plain text format. You'll have to read them yourself, or get a program that can read them to you, (like the Linux program Festival, also FREE. If you're a Windows user, there are other programs.)

Enjoy!
