Hope springs eternal

When George W. Bush was elected, I told my brother that ‘nothing so bad could happen (as a result of Bush being president) that I would be surprised. I said he would get us into a war, shred the Constitution, and impoverish ordinary Americans. My brother said, ‘Come on, it’s not that bad.’

After eight years of being right, and not surprised, I look forward to a Democratic President Obama supported by a Democratic congress. Now that McCain’s flaws are undeniable, it appears that the good guys will finally be in power again. I know that Neo-cons hope that the Democrats will be so busy cleaning up Bush’s mess that they won’t have time to forward Democratic ideals, but I think they underestimate how powerful those ideals are.

As a Democrat, I believe that the strong, central government created by the constitution is what makes America great. I believe that individuals working together can travel to the moon. To say, ‘I vote for the man, not the party,’ is to show misunderstanding about the difference between Republicans and Democrats. Republicans want to disable the government that makes America strong, prosperous and free.

It took Barrack Obama to explain this to America’s youth. Although any Roosevelt Democrat recognizes the principles he so clearly states, few of us took the time to reiterate them. We're all in this together. What makes our Constitutional government strong, makes individual citizens strong. Because I know how powerful those principles are, I believe that nothing so great could happen under Democrat’s governance that I would be surprised.
