Astronauts and Feminists

Astronauts and feminists

I went to a chemistry symposium on Saturday. It was in honor of WWU’s retired president, Karen Morse. One of the featured speakers was Marjorie C. Caserio who is retired chancellor of UC San Diego. Caserio began her talk with the odd comment that she was not a feminist, then proceeded to tell us about all the obstacles that she overcame as a woman in chemistry. I don’t care if she calls herself a feminist or not. She pried a lot of doors open. One of the women who came through those doors after her was Karen Morse.

Another notable speaker was astronaut George ‘Pinky’ Nelson. He is currently Western’s director of Science, Mathematics, and Technology Education program. He basically talked about how WWU’s program for teaching science to public school teachers improved the students test scores. I didn’t think he was a good speaker, but hey, he’s been in space.
