Newspaper of Horror

Have you ever tried to think of something funny to write after watching a Japanese horror film? Unlike American horror films the Japanese have no sense of whimsy when it comes to tearing away the veil of reason that separates us from the supernatural. The movie I saw tonight, “Premonition” has the simple theme that we determine our own destiny. (And it left me in very philosophical mood which I am trying to spare you from.)

The vampires and werewolves of Twilight are in a different position than the Japanese college professor who was receiving the Newspaper of Horror. They are cursed, doomed, predestined with a particular nature. The supernatural determines the rules for monsters, and there is no free will. I can understand why that appeals to teenagers.

But still, no funny thoughts.

A couple of months ago I watched a Chinese horror film called, “The Maid.” It was a very good movie, and once again very different from American movies because its theme was that justice will be meted out by the supernatural. A Ying/Yang kind of balance.

“Premonition” did take some license with reality. It showed a bunch of people getting on a train at rush hour and there weren't any people pushers.
