Doing Something

The earthquake in Haiti is the worst natural disaster in my lifetime, more horrific than Hurricane Katrina, so it is hard to go long without checking the news. But instead of Katrina stories that left me feeling helpless and frustrated, the stories coming out of Haiti are about people rushing to help others out of their desperation.

The United States military has taken over the airport because there is no Haitian government left. From there, water, food and other aid is moving smoothly. So far, the victims are not doing any Lord of the Flies crimes, which seems to surprise the folks at FOX news. Could this be a wake up call for some with a world view that humans are nasty, selfish creatures?

Sprint is the only phone company that charges for text calls to donate money. Shame on them.

The news over the next week is bound to get worse, but not because people turned away from the tragedy. Our response to this crisis will change the world, and the way we look at ourselves and other people.
