Kidnapping Children

Every few years the news reports on some wretched, mentally ill person who tried to steal a baby. Reporters don't try to make excuses or find reasons. The kidnapper is dealt with as a criminal. I don't think anyone questions whether this type of person is mentally unstable, but reporters don't try to make excuses for them or find some well-meaning, if poorly thought out, good intention.

So why are those ten people who kidnapped over thirty Haitian children being treated as though they still have a solid connection with reality? Why are news reporters going to so much effort to give them the benefit of the doubt that perhaps their motives were pure?

They kidnapped children. They are dangerous and mentally deranged. No excuses. Being part of a deranged group instead of acting individually makes them more dangerous, not less.
