Single's Bar

The male rufus hummingbird showed up this week with his copper orange back and iridescent scarlet bib. He staked out the feeders like it was a single's bar. I'm determined to get his picture every time he sits still for a second so I have dozens of blurry orange or red blurs. It might be impossible to catch both the bib and orange back in the same photo, but since I have a digital camera, there's no harm in trying.

After mating season, the females will chase him away so by the end of June, he will be long gone. The females and adolescents are fun to watch, but the colors are barely worth mentioning.

I think a calliope hummingbird wintered over, but I don't know if it is still around. It looked like a female rufus, which is mostly greenish, but it was much smaller.

Birds are especially fun to watch this time of year, but hummingbirds are the most fun because they rarely sit still long enough to be examined. Charming advice- be elusive.
