Personal Best

Ryanne is having another cross country meet today. We learned last time that this is not a spectator sport, but since she is making the effort to run, I will make the effort to cheer her on.

I'm not sure why this is even considered a competition. Certainly, some people run faster than others. Some have more endurance. But since most of the action takes on the hilly, wooded terrain of Cornwall Park, it's more of a fun run. Except for the spectators, for whom it is a 'try to keep the camera from shutting off automatically in case that's her coming around the curve next' run.

In middle school, as sixth grade is called around here, atheletes are supposed to strive for 'personal best.' That is a charming phrase for 'everybody wins.' I'm not sure how the concept of competition fits into that goal.

I enjoy watching Ryanne run. Not all, but some other competitors have the same grace. Which, during a cross country meet, spectators get to see for about thirty seconds during an hour race.
